Copy Editing

In copy editing, I carefully read your paper, twice through, and:

·         Correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, & word use

·         Polish & streamline sentences

·         Suggest more precise or colorful vocabulary

·         Turn passive verbs into actives (… it makes writing more powerful, immediate)

·         Align subject-verb phrases

·         Insert questions & suggestions to help you clarify concepts

·         Correct errors in in-text citations based on major academic style guides

·         Point out:

·         Where to add transitions (I’ll add them when possible)

·         When to paraphrase rather than quote

·         Redundancies in ideas and phrasing

·         Incomprehensible sentences that need rewriting

·         Language bias (gender, age, racial, cultural, religious, etc.)

·           I’ll also write a brief note to you regarding global issues such as whether your theme or thesis is clear or murky, and whether it’s well threaded throughout, and major questions that appear to be unanswered.

Structural Editing
In structural editing, I read papers  thoroughly and comment on The Big Picture: the paper’s overall structure, clarity, and flow. I point out strengths and weaknesses, focusing on the following:

·         Is the theme or thesis clear ... and threaded throughout?

·         Is the hypothesis (if there is one) clear and measurable?

·         Do the ideas flow logically?

·         Is the argument convincing?

·         Are the concepts well supported with facts, examples, theory, citations, statistics?

·         Does the paper address the issues identified in the introduction?

·         Does the conclusion reflect the findings and offer a fresh perspective?

I also point out:

·         "Holes" in logic

·         Where transitions are needed

·         When to paraphrase rather than use a lifeless quote

·         Wordiness and clichés

·         Extraneous information that you could cut or place in footnotes/endnotes

·         Murky sentences that need rewriting

In structural editing, I do not copy edit for spelling, grammar, and punctuation … papers should be edited beforehand.

Structural Editing Fee: $50 for 1,000 words.

Call (617) 547-7647 to discuss your project and deadline, or email details to WordwiseEditing@aol.com.

Note: You must carefully read your edited document to review all comments and corrections and to delete my editorial comments.  See Disclaimer

Coaching
Some scholars become lost or "muddled" when working on lengthy writing projects such as dissertations or journal articles. With so much to include
¾ facts, theories, research findings, and quotations ¾ and many ideas swirling, it's easy to get stuck.  Feeling overwhelmed, some avoid writing; others cope by writing volumes and getting lost in the chaos.

Coaching sessions can help you identify obstacles and map out a workable plan to complete your project. I listen carefully, reflect ideas and:

·         Explore issues that might be blocking the writer

·         Clarify the thesis and the papers' primary points

·         Examine how insights or findings converge with or diverge from theory

·         Identify:

o        additional research needed to complete the study

o        sections that can be cut; ideas to be added

Outlines are key to successful writing. In coaching, I help you:

·                     write outlines or review and revise yours

·                     Devise a step-by-step Work Plan that breaks down your project into small, manageable tasks

·                     Set up a workable schedule to complete the tasks and your project

Coaching provides a nonjudgmental "ear" and emotional support to help you work through writing problems.  Through coaching, you can better focus your attention and move forward.
Coaching Fee: $50 per 1-hour session
