Proofreading
Proofreading is light editing: I simply correct typos and errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation. (Usually international students require copy editing, not proofreading.)  See Proofreading Sample

Proofreading Fee: $40 for 5 to 7 pages  (double-spaced, 12-point font), depending on writing quality and whether it's edited on-line or on hardcopy.

Structural Editing
In structural editing, I read papers  thoroughly and comment on The Big Picture ...  the paper's overall structure, clarity, and flow.  I point out the paper's strengths and weaknesses and focus on the following:

  • Is the theme or thesis clear ... and threaded throughout?

  • Is the hypothesis (if there is one) clear and measurable?

  • Do the ideas flow logically?

  • Is the argument convincing?

  • Are the concepts supported with facts, examples, theory, citations, statistics?

  • Does the paper address the issues identified in the introduction?

  • Does the conclusion reflect the findings and offer a fresh perspective?

I also point out:

  • "Holes" in logic

  • Where transitions are needed

  • When to paraphrase rather than use a lifeless quote

  • Wordiness and clichés

  • Extraneous information that could be cut or placed in footnotes/endnotes

  • Incomprehensible sentences that need rewriting

In structural editing, I do not copy edit for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. (Papers should be edited beforehand.)  I do structural editing for non-technical papers only (i.e., the arts, social sciences and humanities).

Structural Editing Fee: $40 for 5 to 8 pages (double-spaced pages in 12-point font) based on writing quality, editing needs, and whether it's edited on-line vs. hardcopy.

Call (617) 547-7647 to discuss your project and deadline, or email details to WordwiseEditing@aol.com.

Note: Clients must carefully read their edited documents to review all comments and corrections and to delete editorial comments.  More on this, see Disclaimer

Coaching
Some writers become lost or "muddled" when working on lengthy writing projects such as dissertations.  With so much to include facts, theories, research findings, and quotations and many ideas swirling, it's easy to get stuck.  Feeling overwhelmed, some students avoid writing; others cope by writing volumes and getting lost in the chaos.

Coaching sessions can help writers identify obstacles and map out a workable plan to complete their projects.  I listen carefully, reflect ideas and:

  • Explore issues that might be blocking the writer

  • Clarify the thesis and the papers' primary points

  • Examine how insights or findings converge with or diverge from theory

  • Identify:

    • additional research needed to complete the study

    • sections that can be cut; ideas to be added

Outlines are key to successful writing.  In coaching sessions, I help students write outlines or review and revise them. I also help students write a step-by-step Work Plan that breaks down a project into small, manageable tasks.

Sometimes students simply need a nonjudgmental "ear" and emotional support to work through writing problems.  Through coaching, students can better focus their attention and move forward.
Coaching Fee: $45 per one-hour session

Tutoring
I help students at all levels — elementary, high school and college — improve their writing skills. Through in-class exercises and assignments students learn:

  • Ways to outline and structure essays and other writing projects

  • To write drafts and polish them

  • To write various types of essays expository, descriptive, comparative, analytical, personal, etc.

  • Improve grammar and sentence structure

  • Practice writing essays for standardized tests MCAS, SAT, GMAT, GRE, etc.

  • Explore fiction and poetry

Tutoring lessons are geared to the individual’s needs.

Tutoring Fee: $50 per one-hour session

Outlines are crucial
to good writing.

Write an outline,
