Graduate School Application Essays

Most U.S.  graduate schools seek students who not only have excellent grades and test scores (GRE, GMAT, LSAT, etc.), but also have unique experiences and perspectives to bring to the classroom.  In addition, admissions committees look for candidates with clear career goals and specific interests, along with a strong motivation to succeed.

In editing graduate school application essays, I help students present themselves as thoughtful individuals with unique perspectives and enthusiasm for the profession.  Application essays should also demonstrate the student's ability to think analytically.  In editing essays, I suggest ways to improve the essay. I pose questions that can help clarify, such as, How exactly did you help your company double its profits? or, Besides "helping people," what else draws you to medicine?  or, How have your experiences led you to this graduate program? My aim is to help students weave their experiences, goals, and achievements into engaging essays.  I read the essay, word for word, and:

  • Correct errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and word use

  • Streamline sentences

  • Suggest changes in structure and content (if necessary)

  • Point out "holes" in logic

  • Turn passive verbs into powerful verbs

  • Delete redundancies and jargon

  • Underline incomprehensible sentence (if any) that need rewriting

I also edit résumés since, very often, admissions committee members look at this first to gain an overview of applicants.  I also like to review résumés to ensure that applicants' experiences dovetail with their goals.
