About
the Editor
I began academic
editing in 1994 when I was a freelance writer. To supplement my
writing work, I
began marketing my editing services to students at Boston-area colleges
–
MIT, Harvard,
Boston University, Brandeis, and Tufts. Soon I was flooded with
academic editing projects.
Since then, I've edited hundreds of research papers,
master's theses, Ph.D. dissertations, and journal articles primarily for
international students studying
in Boston. Many scholars continue to work with me over the Internet
when they return to their home countries.
Having worked as an academic editor
for a decade now, I'm quite familiar with the major style
guides, citation and plagiarism rules, thesis and dissertation
structures, the Ph.D. process, and journal publication
requirements. I've also become expert in streamlining and editing academic
papers.
Furthermore, as a member of the
Cambridge Academic Editors Network (CAEN), I've shared strategies for
assisting students
– both ESL and native-English speakers
– with
their writing. Through my experiences, I've come to
understand the struggles that students, particularly international
students, face when writing.
Prior to becoming an academic editor, I worked as a
staff reporter and freelance writer. I've published numerous articles in newspapers
and journals including The Boston Globe, The Boston Herald, The Boston
Business Journal, Lawyers Weekly USA, The Worcester Business Journal, The Needham Chronicle,
and
The
(MIT) Tech, among others.
My journalism experience informs my
editing. My aim is to help
students produce clear, lively, and informative papers that reflect solid
research.
Some students think that academic writing must be formal and wordy to be
scholarly. In fact, professors, as well as the general public, appreciate concise,
colorful writing.
As for my education, I have a Master's Degree in Social
Work and worked as counselor in the 1980s. My counseling background
has helped me coach students struggling with writing projects. During my transition to the world of words, I was an administrative assistant at MIT
where I began assisting international students with their writing
projects.
Since I run a small editing business, I can give
students individual attention. I work with students in person and over the Internet, though I prefer
meeting with students initially to clarify concerns and
expectations. I work independently and am not affiliated
with any college or university.
